Fig, Blackberry and Apple Post Workout Drink

This is going to be a really quick write up, as there really isn’t a whole lot to say about it! I went for my usual run, did some weights when I got back, then opened the fridge to see what I had to zap up for a post workout drink.

Saw some figs, some blackberries and lots of apples! Perfect, I thought, autumn in a glass! So we’ve got

  • figs
  • blackberries
  • apples
  • soya milk (you can use whatever you like)
  • chia seeds
  • protein powder, unflavoured

So simple, using what I had in the fridge for a delicious restorative drink. You can add your usual amount of creatine in there if you use it, for the complete post workout drink.

Protein Powder in your Smoothie

If you don’t consume protein powder, then just omit it. It really does depend on how much protein you are aiming for in your workout nutrition, or your diet, generally. The chia seeds also contribute towards the total protein in the drink.

Personally, I swear by protein powders, ever since I was introduced to it by a gym instructor when I was about 20 or so. And since my kids went vegetarian a few years back, even more reason for it now, as I don’t consume as much meat.

Protein is important as you grow older, to maintain strength and muscle mass, as well as bone health. The older you get, the less efficient your body is in processing it, so make sure you get enough through your food, in whatever form.

I’m allowing for an optional teaspoon of honey, depending on how tart your fruits are, you may need it. But that’s just a matter of taste.

Purple Smoothie

This post workout drink is also good for you because purple foods are good for you! There is no way you could have missed all the “eatmorepurple” articles littering the media since late last year. So, here we go:

Purple, blue and deep red foods contain anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants, which we all know, is good for you! Just include purple food in your diet, and you’re set for life!

I did say quick post, didn’t I? Kind of. Shall we get our aprons on?

This is great, Azlin, glad I saw it today, on a Monday! Will pick some figs up at lunch, and make this up for after the gym tonight. Many thanks.
