There is no doubt that food is life. Humans require it to survive, but that doesn’t mean the importance of food ends there. The right dish, with perfect ingredients, can prove to be a mood enhancer, it can help satiate most cravings and satisfy not just the stomach but also the soul.
A beautiful aspect of food is that there is so much available to try and appreciate, as you travel around the globe. Every region has its own exotic ingredients, cooking methods, and take on how to serve what they make. Recently, there has been a culinary revolution with more food lovers than ever indulging in gastronomic delights, from ever-changing weird food trends to posting photos on Instagram of what they are consuming daily. When it comes to eating, though, nothing can beat the taste and warmth of comfort food. These are typically easy to eat, quick preparations that have a unique charm about them, and tend to have a distinctly positive effect on whoever bites into them.
Hot Dog – USA
It can’t get any simpler than this. Take a soft bun, cut it partially in the middle, fill it up with sausage, and top it up with mustard or ketchup, and your hot dog is ready. The classic American comfort food has been the go-to delicacy for people on the move, wanting a quick filler. Now, there is the original hot dog that you can pick up from a stand on the streets of New York. Still, for those who prefer a little more flavour, many places in American make speciality dogs, that feature extra ingredients from cheese and bacon to caramelised onions and a host of different, flavoured sauces.
Pani Puri – India
Depending on which part of India you travel to, pani puri is known by different names. However, it doesn’t matter if you call it puchkas or gol gappas, there is absolutely nothing, in terms of taste when it comes to pani puri. These water balls consist of little crunchy puris made with semolina or flour which are then filled with a mixture of chickpeas, potatoes, tamarind chutney and spices. To top it all off, the ball is dipped in flavoured water and eaten in one bite. Now, you can cook pani puri at home with ease. However, the best way to experience the complexities and textural profile of this fantastic dish is to eat it from one of the many roadside stalls you will find across the country.
Fondue – Switzerland
What’s not to like about melted cheese? Fondue is the most incredible food to ever come from Switzerland and one that is ideal for a sit-down with friends and family. The idea of dipping vegetables or meats into bubbling hot cheese is what defines comfort food. A meal in itself, it’s nice to pick up a glass of Swiss wine to accompany this cheesy delight, especially on cold winter nights, when the dish is sure to warm the cockles of your heart.
French Onion Soup – France
The French are particularly known for their exquisite cuisine, but they too have a few tricks up their sleeves. Amongst them is the worldwide favourite, French onion soup. Bursting with intense flavours, the soup is the perfect winter-time comforter that can start any meal with a bang. What makes the soup all the more special is the meat stock, which gives it more depth, as well as the bread with cheese that comes floating on top. A bowl of well-made, hot, French onion soup is probably the most soul-satisfying culinary experience you’ll ever have.
