Mocha Berry Protein Smoothie

This Mocha Berry protein smoothie is a favourite post workout smoothie for me. It does so many things all at once: keeps my metabolism going longer, I get my protein fix with it, my fruit intake and a little calcium with the milk. Definitely a multi purpose smoothie!

Mocha Berry Protein Smoothie

I love fruits, and I especially love berries. But, I am a little lazy and impatient when it comes to eating them! Also, given their sometimes tart nature, especially out of season, they aren’t always the easiest fruits to eat. My solution? Dump them in a smoothie and drink them! Much quicker and let’s face it, probably better digested too.

Unless you are in that camp that believes that fruit should only be consumed on their own. However, that’s a debate for another day, not that I don’t regularly have it with my husband!

Let’s talk about today’s Mocha Berry Protein Smoothie, shall we? The first time I made it, I only added some expresso to the fruit and milk (besides the protein powder, which is de rigueur for me). It was nice, but when I sprinkled some cocoa powder on it, it was immeasurable better. Which is rather interesting, because I am not a huge mocha fan. But the cocoa powder completed the picture, giving the smoothie, a beautiful smoky, sweet and a touch tart taste.

It’s quite a “busy” smoothie in terms of ingredients. Let’s see now, we have:

  • espresso
  • milk – whatever milk you fancy is fine
  • a handful strawberries
  • a handful raspberries
  • a small banana – because I discovered coffee and banana go so well together in the Coffee, Avocado and Banana Smoothie
  • 1 serving vanilla protein powder
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder – pure, no sugar added

Vanilla makes this smoothie better. Either use a vanilla protein powder or add 1/2 tsp vanilla extract/paste. Or even a shaving of vanilla, if you have access to that sort of stuff.

So what I do, is make a shot or two of espresso, place it in the fridge, and go off to workout, whether it’s just a run or resistance training. Then when I’m done, the espresso would have cooled down enough to make a smoothie with. If you forget, just add 3-4 ice cubes and blend it all up.

I hope you enjoy this smoothie, as much as I do, it’s always nice to have a few different types, to prevent boredom. And I must confess that I am partial to the fruity kinds!

So, let’s get our aprons on!

That’s a really interesting combination. Wouldn’t have thought to mix berries with coffee. Thanks, will give it a try for my post workouts.
