Baileys Original Irish Cream, launched in 1974, to me, is still the best cream liqueur on the market, with its secret blend of Irish whiskey, fresh Irish cream, a touch of cocoa and vanilla.
Admittedly, at about £16 – £20 ($20-$25) per bottle, it is pricier than some of the other cream liqueurs out there, but trust me, the money is more than well spent.
What does Baileys taste like?
No other whiskey cream comes close to the multitudinous sensations one enjoys when drinking Baileys.
The first sip is a balanced, well rounded and seamless combination of silky smooth, sharp and hot.
The second sip only heightens that initial warm and rich pleasure. The various flavours and sensations hit you all at once and one after the other!
Oh yes, it’s complicated, but oh, so delightfully complicated!
How do you drink Baileys?
My preference is with a little ice (on the rocks), not too much that it’ll dilute the Baileys, just a few cubes to add chill to your drink and lighten it just a smidgen. At 17% ABV, it is a potent delight and is meant to be sipped and savoured. Never rushed!
Baileys Cocktails and Drinks
Naturally, this iconic Irish Drink also makes a fantastic ingredient in many other drinks and cocktails.
This shooter is a layered drink, named after the popular 70s band. There are many variations to the theme, with changes in the alcohol used, but the original one features Kahlua (a coffee liqueur), Baileys and Grand Marnier, in that order. Click here for the the super easy recipe.
Something I played around with a few years ago, made with Baileys, cream and crème de cacao. Click here for the recipe, or the image above.
If you love creamy drinks, this one’s for you. But be warned, it is so guileless in both appearance and flavour, that you’ll be savouring it without a care in the world.
Until you stand up and can’t even imagine a straight line, much less walk it!
Baileys Irish Coffee
This is quite often my preferred drink to finish off a meal with when I’m dining out. Just make your coffee as you normally would, with or without milk. Then finish off with a shot of Baileys.
It is a well known fact that I love to cook and bake with what I love to drink. As this Irish cream is a favourite tipple, it tends to find its way into the kitchen quite frequently. Two favourites, and perfect for Thanksgiving and Christmas, or Easter, is Baileys Tiramisu and Baileys Mocha Cheesecake.
Other Baileys Flavours
In the last few years, the people behind this cream liqueur have introduced a variety of flavours including
- Mint Chocolate
- Orange Truffle
- Salted Caramel
- Chocolat Luxe
I’ve tried them, but my heart will always belong to the Baileys Original Irish Cream.
